Some Cyber-shot DSC-W170 Compacts Are Defective

Sony has issued a public notice to owners of their Cyber-shot DSC-W170 digital camera. The metal plating could peel off from the casing surrounding the lens.

Sony is offering to replace the defective casing free of charge. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and your kind understanding and cooperation is much appreciated,” the company said.

The W170 compact camera was released in April 2008. To determine if a camera is affected, Sony advises users to check the serial number at the bottom of the unit against their published list.

In the USA the affected serial numbers are as follows:

RED 6501781 – 6736570
GOLD 6530821 – 6757270
BLACK 6504371 – 6740170
SILVER Not Affected
