Research firm IDC has reported a 14% increase in camera sales for the third quarter, with 6.8 million camera units sold.
IDC said the overall growth in the market was boosted by sales of digital SLRs and entry-level point-and-shoot cameras.
The Q3 results showed Canon, Kodak, Sony and Nikon still entrenched as the Top Four, in that order. Samsung, who was at the bottom previously, jumped to No. 5 with 11% of the market, followed by Hewlett-Packard at No. 6 with 6%.
Samsung got there by way of aggressive pricing on its 5-MP cameras and good distribution in mass merchant channels and shopping clubs, IDC said.
