The Canon Virtual Lens Plant and Why Lenses are Expensive

Canon Virtual Lens Plant

It’s the weekend and maybe we can revisit the good old Canon Virtual Lens Plant and learn a bit about the manufacturing process that goes into the production of camera lenses.

What’s in it for me, you may ask; well, for one you’ll get to know why many lenses are so-o-o-o expensive, costing much more than your DSLR in many cases. For another, it’s good for you, kiddo, education is always a virtue.

The plant tour takes you from the fine powder mix at the start of the production process to the finished lens, in this case an EF 500mm f/4L IS.

It also features descriptions of Canon lens technologies and interviews with Canon staff involved in lens production.

Be warned, though, watch it only if you have a good broadband connection; anything less than 768 Kbps is a drag, but you can try.
