Samsung is gearing up for what it expects to be an exploding mobile devices market up to the foreseeable year 2010. The company has been positioning tiny hard disk drives that pack high capacity storage in advance of the demand.
Samsung’s latest offering is a 1.8-inch 160GB drive in its Spinpoint N2 Series, an upgrade from its recently released 120GB 1.8†HDD in the same series.
“The 1.8-inch HDD market will grow at a tremendous pace with annual sales expected to increase up to 65% by 2010,†says Andrew Higginbotham, director of hard drive sales and marketing, Samsung Semiconductor Inc.
HDD camcorders are expected to grow from 4 million units in 2006 to over 8 million units by the end of 2011. 1.8†HDDs are also gaining momentum as storage devices for MP3 players and other portable media players.
