Patrick Schneider, a photographer for the Charlotte Observer, was recently fired for altering a photo for the second time in three years. In 2003 Schneider was not only reprimanded and suspended for three days without pay, but he was also stripped of three awards that he had received from the North Carolina Press Photographers Associaton.
Apparently this offense was ironically similar to the last: both photos in question were of firefighters and both times he was accused of altering color in photos. Rick Thames, editor for the Observer, explained in an interview that Schneider has violated the Observer’s policy against altering color photos, also known as “toning,” and that the policy was put in place as a result of Schneider’s first violation!
