Time Inc. today announced it will end publication of LIFE magazine, the iconic serial now distributed as a weekend newspaper supplement. Its last issue will be dated April 20, 2007.
The LIFE supplement was carried in 103 newspapers with a circulation total of 13 million. This is the third time that it dies, apparently withering in an unfavorable newspaper ad environment.
LIFE magazine was re-launched for the third time in 2004 after a historic existence that ended in 1972. It re-appeared a few years after that as a monthly, folded, then came back as a supplement.
In its heyday, the iconic magazine was noted for its outstanding photography and coverage of the world’s momentous events. LIFE engendered legendary photographers such as Alfred Eisenstaedt, Margaret Bourke-White and Gordon Parks, among others.
LIFE will live on in cyberspace, though. Time will launch a major portal to put its entire collection of 10 million images online, where the public will be able to view LIFE’s collection of images covering the events and people of the 20th century for free.
