Home setup for product shots

Hey guys, great podcast. My question is one about the A-Z’s of setting up a good home setup for taking still-life product shots. Some suggestions for what equipment to use would be great. There are a lot of small diffusion boxes out there but very little information on what lighting to use with them. Hot lights? flash units? wattseconds? Any help or suggestions would be apreciated. Keep up the good work.

The type and size of lights for products depends very much on the product. For small still life photos, you might use a set of 500 watt continuous lights. For larger items, there may be a need for more power. At that point, strobes may be more appropriate.

Another consideration is the type and shape of the desired reflections. Since the size and shape of the source in addition to the amount of diffusion effects this, it may be appropriate to choose a light source that can provide enough light on the subject through the various levels of diffusion.

We agree that this would make a great topic for the podcast. We’ll see if we can get together an audio article for this topic. Thanks for the compliments!
