If Nikon has overtaken Canon in the Japanese DSLR market segment, it’s a different picture in Europe, where Canon still reigns supreme, not just in DSLR sales but more so in compact camera sales.
According to figures from the research firm GfK, Canon attained the top position in both digital SLR and digital compact markets in 2007.
“2007 was an outstanding year for Canon in the growing European camera markets. Not only did the company maintain its number one position, it did so against a background of increasing competition,†beams Mogens Jensen, head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe.
Canon got the lion’s share (48.7 percent) of the European DSLR market in 2007, with the EOS 400D (Rebel XTi) alone selling close to 700,000 units.
