Panasonic USA today announced the latest Lumix DMC-FZ18 digital camera equipped with such a very long zoom you can shoot all the way to the moon.
Okay, I’m exaggerating a little, but you get the idea. The DMC-FZ18 features 18x optical zoom, equivalent to a jaw-dropping 28-504mm on a 35mm film camera.
To get a good shot with a very long zoom lens, you need super-steady hands or a steady tripod. Or equip your camera with image stabilization. The Lumix DMC-FZ18 has that too.
Of course, this new Lumix camera is not the first one in the block to offer an 18x zoom; the Olympus SP-550UZ already did that a while back. While the SP-550UZ offered 7.1 megapixels, the DMC-FZ18 offers 8.1, a very minor difference if you ask me.
What matters is that the SP-550UZ did not quite live up to its hype. Will the DMC-FZ18 survive?
