Zink Camera-Printer to Ship Late this Year

Zink Camera Printer

The Zink (zero-ink) digital camera-cum-printer that we reported about early this year is now becoming a reality. Almost, anyway.

The Zink digital camera-printer will be available towards the end of this year, according to its makers, maybe in time for the Christmas season.

But the specs are all laid up and the prototypes have all been tested. The new camera will have 7 megapixels and a 3x optical zoom, plus a 2.0 LCD screen. No surprises there.

What sets this apart is its ability to print its own shots, with no ink at that. It will print borderless 2” x 3” photos on proprietary Zink paper.

It’s called zero-ink because the Zink technology uses heat, much like a dye sub printer does, but the dyes are embedded into the paper itself. The colors come out as the paper is precisely heated as it passes under the thermal print head.

There’s no price as yet announced for this product, but we hope they stick to their $200 target for this device. The propriety Zink paper could be tricky, though. As with all merchandize available only from one source, the price tends to shoot through the roof.
