The WD VelociRaptor makes me imagine a T-Rex on overdrive but perhaps the effect is intentional. The new hard drive from Western Digital boasts 10,000RPM after all, compared with the usual 5400RPM rotational speed of most hard drives.
The VelociRaptor (big word!) is now shipping, available in 300GB capacity. Its killer speed delivers 3Gigabits per second (Gbps) via SATA interface. Its 16MB cache supports that enormous speed.
Heat? You bet! That’s why they enclosed this 2.5-inch hard drive in a 3.5-inch mounting frame with a built-in heat sink. Install this on your high-performance desktop PC and you’ll never have a problem with heat.
As a matter of fact, WD VelociRaptor hard drives will be available on Alienware’s high-performance ALX gaming desktop by the end of April. At launch, Alienware will offer maximum performance with two 300 GB WD VelociRaptor hard drives in RAID 0 configuration.
WD VelociRaptor drives will be shipping exclusively through Alienware this month and will be available through the company’s online store (www.shopwd.com) and at select distributors and resellers mid-May. $300, the price.
