Liquid lens maker Varioptic SA announced today the appointment of Linos AG as their distributor in Germany, and in the rest of the world through its subsidiaries in France, UK and the USA.

Varioptic makes liquid lenses (also known as fluidic lenses) which provide autofocus solutions for small cameras that fit into consumer devices such as mobile phones, PDAs and web cams, and industrial devices like barcode readers, biometry readers, endoscopes, and diagnostic instruments to automotive applications.

Among the Varioptic products now in the market are the Arctic 320 and Arctic 416 liquid lenses, the AFL872 lens module and the AFCM MI285 camera module.

A liquid lens can change its shape, and thus its focus, without need for any bulky motor; its tiny form is ideal for small devices. It also has no moving parts and offers a host of other advantages such as a large inverse focal length range, fast response, very good optical quality and simple low-cost construction.

Under their agreement, Linos and Varioptic will provide training and support to their customers. They are also proposing eight developer’s kits aimed at supporting customers in all stages of product developments, from a simple evaluation to product integration and prototype development.
