Toshiba Develops 51GB HD-DVD Disc

Toshiba 51GB HD-DVD Disc

Talk about one-upmanship: hot on the heels of Verbatim’s announcement of a 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray Disc, Toshiba of the competing format also announced their triple-layer HD-DVD disc with a capacity of (gasp!) 51GB.

But unlike the Blu-ray disc (BD) which has started production, the 51GB Toshiba HD-DVD merely announced its development, and they still have to secure approval of the new disc by the DVD Forum within this year. More like chest-thumping really, than anything else.

Toshiba’s new ROM disc has a three-layer structure, with each layer storing 17GB of data. The new disc can store up to 7 hours of high-definition video and adds an extended capacity, high-end option to the already extensive line-up of HD DVD-ROM discs.
