The 2007 National Geographic International Photography Contest

National Geographic’s international photo contest this year will have four categories: people, landscape, animals and, new for 2007, photo essay. A grand prize winner will be chosen in each category and will be announced in December.

For the first time, readers of National Geographic’s English-language editions in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and United Kingdom will be able to participate in the contest that was inaugurated in 16 of its local-language editions in 2006.

This year, 26 local-language editions will take part; these will submit their winning entries to National Geographic headquarters to be judged with the winning English-language entries.

For English-language-edition contestants, a portfolio of up to 10 photographs in the new photo essay category may be submitted. “We’re looking for a photographer who tells a visual narrative, a story with a very clear beginning, middle and end,” says National Geographic Director of Photography David Griffin (not our David Griffin).

For the people, landscape and animals categories, up to six photos may be submitted. Photos can be black & white or color, shot with a digital camera or film.

You may start submitting your entries starting August 1. Deadline for entries will be on October 31, 2007.
