Compal Ultra Mobile Device

This Compal UMD (ultra mobile device) could go to work. It doesn’t use the bloated Windows Vista but the slender Windows CE 5.0. Why go for a battery-draining hog when the nimble cat is what you really need for this type of device?

And because it’s Flash-based, you get instant-on computing here. The Compal is powered by a 532MHz Freescale i.MX31 ARM1136 processor and features HSDPA, 256MB of SDRAM and 512MB of Flash RAM, WiFI, Bluetooth, a 1.3 MP camera and a miniSD card slot because you’ll surely feel like adding a little more Flash RAM in there.

The Taiwan-made Compal is extremely lightweight at just under 10 ounces (0.6 lb). Its 4.3-inch WVGA (800 x 480, 16M colors) sliding display isn’t so bad either, as is its QWERTY thumboard which neatly hides under. It also does double duty as a mobile phone.

Its whispered price is in the $400 to $500 range and it should come out in time for X’mas 2007.
