Sony W300 Compact Packs It In at 13.6 Megapixels

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300 Digital Camera

The Cyber-shot DSC-W300 is at the top of Sony’s compact point-and-shoot product line, boasting 13.6 megapixels and a 3x zoom Carl Zeiss lens. Its metal body is titanium-coated to make it highly resistant to scratches.

One good thing about it is that they retained an eye-level viewfinder in the W300; that bright 2.7-inch LCD screen is going to sip a lot of juice from the battery. The viewfinder will let you to shoot with the LCD off, a thrifty measure when you’re running low on battery.

For capturing fast action, the W300 can be set to shoot at 3 megapixels and record 5 frames per second in burst mode, ideal for shooting sports and children.

It also features what Sony calls Smile Shutter technology; it prioritizes the faces of children or adults so that the camera takes the photo at the moment the intended subject smiles. Improved face detection technology can also prioritize child or adult faces as the basis for the camera to apply focus, exposure, white balance and flash color controls for up to eight faces in the camera’s frame.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300 camera will be available in May for about $350. If you don’t need all of those 13.6 megapixels, its DSC-120 sibling with 7.2 megapixels is a very good alternative at $200.
