Sony Launches NEX-3, NEX-5 Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Cameras

The new Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5 digital cameras aim to deliver DSLR quality in a compact body. This is a new interchangeable lens camera system from Sony, and initial tests show impressive features.

The two cameras are constructed using the 14.6-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS image sensor and the new mirrorless E-mount. While promising high quality DSLR still photos, these new cameras also offer high definition video capture: 720p with the NEX-3 and 1080i AVCHD with the NEX-5.

And HD video capture is where the Sony NEX system seems to excel; the NEX-3 and NEX-5 feature continuous autofocus and exposure adjustment while recording video, a shortcoming among many new DSLRs that offer video recording.

The Sony NEX system will be available in July. The NEX-5A and NEX-3A cameras, which are supplied with SEL16F28 lens, will cost about $650 and $550 respectively. NEX-5K and NEX-3K cameras, supplied with SEL1855 lens will cost about $700 and $600 respectively. The NEX-3 will be available in silver, black and red, and the NEX-5 in silver and black.
