SanDisk, Microsoft Collaborate on Next-Gen U3 Flash Memory

SanDisk and Microsoft have agreed to jointly develop the next generation of smart U3 flash drives; SanDisk will deliver new hardware capabilities while Microsoft will develop “a new software experience.”

SanDisk’s existing U3 Smart Technology is still quite new, and U3 smart drives, the size of a pack of chewing gum or smaller, allow users to carry not only files but also popular Windows software applications with their associated preferences and settings. They simply plug it into a PC and access emails and other apps. When they unplug their U3 smart drive, they take their personal information with them.

The new collaboration with Microsoft aims to improve on this existing U3 technology. The plan seeks to enable users to carry their personal computing environment with them on a flash storage device such as a USB flash drive or flash memory card. Users will then be free to work on public or shared computers with their encrypted data and without fear of leaving personal information behind.
