Samsung to Consolidate Operations in America

Samsung is re-arranging its troops on the ground with the planned integration of the digital still camera business of Samsung Opto-Electronics America (SOA), Inc. and Samsung Electronics America‘s (SEA) consumer electronics business in March of 2008.

The move is designed to leverage existing synergies between the two business units, create new competitive advantages and ultimately enhance the company’s overall brand positioning, says Samsung.

Samsung wants the Number 3 position in the digital camera business, behind Canon and Nikon. But it will be a tough fight for them considering that Sony is well-entrenched in that slot; with Sony’s new offerings that include the latest Alpha 300 and Alpha 350 DSLRs, the climb for Samsung will only get steeper.

Considering their successes however in products like their NV series of compact cameras, Samsung just might be able to surge forward. Samsung’s new GX-20 DSLR may look like a copycat to the better-known Pentax K20D for now, but don’t forget that it is Samsung who makes the imaging sensor. So, go for it, Sammy, and good luck!
