Very soon expect to see slimmer display devices that feature 7-inch WVGA LCD screens. Samsung has begun production this month of the new screens with wide (800 x 480) VGA display and new reduced circuitry.
The new 7†WVGA screens are “well suited for high-end multimedia products such as handsets for digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB), portable multimedia players (PMPs), portable DVD players, and portable navigation systems,” the company said.
On a conventional seven-inch LCD panel, the T-con (time controller that drives the screen), power platform and other components typically are attached to a circuit board on the exterior of the LCD. The complexity of this integration point has been a major obstacle to slimming the package profile of mobile LCD devices.
Samsung has solved this problem with their new single-chip LCD, reducing the overall circuit footprint and component count to about 1/3 of a conventional 7†LCD, making slimmer gadget designs possible.
Samsung will expand its production of the new 7†WVGA screens to 10-million units next year.
