Samsung 64GB 1.8-inch Solid State Drive

Samsung is now mass producing its 1.8-inch solid state drives (SSD) with 64GB capacity. The tiny drives are targeted at the next generation of notebook PCs.

SSDs feature far greater reliability, faster boot times and faster application start-up times than hard disk drives. SSD can also improve battery life by up to 20 percent in notebooks.

Samsung is aggressively promoting the solid state drives as it sees huge growth potentials in notebook PCs that will use SSDs. The new drives are already gaining attention in the market for ultra-light and ultra-slim laptops.

SSDs also are being considered for server applications such as in advertising and for Web search engines. Other digital consumer products such as camcorders, PDAs and printers can now be equipped with SSDs ranging from 4GB to 64GB.

Samsung sees huge growth for SSDs up ahead; their crystal ball says the market for the new drives will grow by 270 percent between now and 2010, and SSDs will be the largest growth segment in the NAND flash industry.
