Phoenix HyperSpace Guns for Fast-Boot PCs

Phoenix Technologies Logo

Phoenix Technologies is developing a new technology called HyperSpace that will allow PC users to instantly start their most used apps – e-mail, web browsers and various media players – and not wait forever for Windows to boot up.

HyperSpace bypasses Windows altogether by simply pressing the F4 key so the user can go directly to his application.

You might recognize Phoenix from its signature on your PCs BIOS flash screen, yes, it’s the company who wrote the firmware code that runs when your PC starts up.

The BIOS (basic input/output system) does a roll call of the hardware inside your PC and initializes them; after which the operating system, such as Windows, takes over.

Windows, as you know, takes forever to boot up and that’s what Phoenix is trying to address. In essence, HyperSpace is a simple operating environment, a layer on top of the BIOS, that runs side-by-side with Windows and can efficiently implement some of the most commonly used apps on a PC.

Perhaps Adobe could also adapt a similar technology to minimize start-up times for Photoshop, like booting up only for the most frequently used tools and not do the song-and-dance for the whole shebang.
