Panasonic Announces $800 Price for Lumix G1 Micro Four Thirds Camera

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 Micro Four Thirds Camera

It’s $800 for the Lumix DMC-G1 Micro Four Thirds camera. That’s the price for the G1, announced by Panasonic today, and that includes the Lumix G Vario 14-45mm/F3.5-5.6 image stabilized kit lens. Another lens, the Lumix G Vario 45-200mm/F4-5.6 OIS telephoto, will sell for $350. All these gear will be available in November.

The Lumix G1 is Panasonic’s first interchangeable lens camera to be available under the Micro Four Thirds system. It will be available in black, blue and red models. Panasonic says the G1 provides the power of a DSLR with many of the easy-to-use features from point-and-shoot digital cameras. You can no longer call it an SLR because the single lens reflex mechanism is gone – no more pentaprism or pentamirror – replaced by a system that more resembles the one used in compact cameras. But you can change lenses and that gives it the power of a DSLR.

“With the LUMIX G1, we’re able to provide manual controls and professional-quality images, while also making the camera much more compact and with intuitive features easy for those new to DSLRs to learn and use,” said David Briganti, National Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company.
