Robert Frank’s influential book of photographs, The Americans, is now 50 years old and in celebration of this anniversary the new Photo Eye magazine is honoring Frank’s work by featuring a two-part commentary on the masterpiece.
Part One of Richard Gordon’s commentary delves on the context, myth and culture surrounding The Americans, while Part Two is a comparative study of the publishing history of The Americans, with a specific eye toward the most recent incarnation: the 50th Anniversary edition published by Steidl.
It’s a good read, Robert Frank and the rest of the articles in Photo Eye magazine, it’s not about apertures or shutter speeds or even how to Photoshop your images to perfection. It’s deeper than that.
