New Flat-Screen TVs and Digital Radios are Power Drains

Flat Screen TVs

A study reported on by the BBC says the growing popularity of hi-tech gadgets and gizmos, such as flat-screen TVs and digital radios, threaten to undermine efforts to save energy.

The report points out that much of the new consumer electronic devices are less efficient than older technology. This can be gleaned from a study titled “The Ampere Strikes Back” commissioned by the UK Energy Saving Trust.

It said flat-screen TVs and digital radios were among the worst offenders. With a growing trend towards much bigger screens, the report said the energy needed to power these TVs will triple.

By 2020, the gadgets will account for about 45 percent of electricity consumed in UK homes.
