Kenji Nagai's Last Moments

Reporters Without Borders and the Burma Media Association have urged Japan’s new prime minister, Yasuo Fukuda, to impose sanctions on the Burmese military regime until those responsible for his murder are brought to trial.

“We call on you to freeze your aid and impose sanctions on the military regime in order to obtain a proper investigation and the trial of those responsible, including the officers who gave the orders to fire on civilians and on Nagai,” the statement said.

A doctor at the Japanese embassy said APF news photographer Kenji Nagai was killed by a bullet that entered through his chest, pierced his heart and exited through his back, indicating that he must have been taking a video of his killer when he was shot pointblank.

In 2003, a Burmese photojournalist was also killed by military thugs during a motorcade with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
