Law Requires Photographers to Wear Safety Vest in Highways

NNA Road Safety Vest

Press photographers who cover accidents in roads and highways are now required by law to wear safety vests; not just any taped-on vest but a real safety vest that conforms to ANSI 107-2004 Class II specifications.

That’s according to a federal law, crafted by the Department of Transportation, which took effect two weeks ago. All media representatives who are working within the rights-of-way of federal-aid highways will be required to wear high-visibility garments.

Which is just as well; covering incidents along fast-moving highways can be dangerous to one’s health. The required safety vest is available from the National Newspaper Association for $15 plus shipping. NNA’s vest will be orange or lime with reflective markings, and a Velcro closure. In large letters on the back will be the word PRESS, and below that, NNA’s logo.
