Nikon is making its last call for entries to the 34th Annual Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition whose deadline is on April 30, 2008. Nikon Small World celebrates the world’s best photomicrographs that show the beauty that can occur at the intersection of science and art.
Photomicrographs must be taken using a light microscope, like the compound or stereoscopic microscopes manufactured by Nikon, but it doesn’t have to be Nikon. The Small World photo contest has produced some of the most stunning scientific photographs for the past decades.
Contest rules are here, as well as the PDF entry form that you have to accomplish and submit to Nikon if you wish to join.
If you’re at all fastidious about copyright issues, know that Nikon Small World is in the Rights Off list of Pro Imaging. Contest rule #10 states that “all winning entries will be retained by Nikon Inc. and cannot be returned.†I guess that means goodbye to your copyright, not just the digital or printed image – you also forever lose the right to exclusively sell the image!
But let’s hear it from Gloria Kwon, a graduate student who took the mouse embryo photo above, Grand Prize winner of the 2007 Nikon Small World Photomicrography contest who said, “As a young scientist, I am amazed by the amount of exposure I’ve received in winning the Nikon Small World competition.â€
Fair deal? You decide. Entrants with the top 20 photos will receive prizes of Nikon equipment, with first and second prize winners receiving $3,000 and $2,000 worth of equipment respectively. Additionally, the winning images will be featured at museums across the country as part of the Nikon Small World Museum Tour.
