Kodak’s new KAC-05020 1.4-micron 5-megapixel image sensor may hold a solution to the problem of crappy mobile phone photos. The current crop of camera phones may pack substantial megapixels but they don’t capture the brightness levels and vibrancy of a dedicated camera.
Kodak’s solution is to re-engineer the CMOS pixel, by reversing the way a sensor measures light and combining this with the company’s own Color Filter Pattern technology.
The new technology provides a 2x to 4x increase in sensitivity to light (from one to two photographic stops) compared to current sensor designs, improving performance in low light and reducing motion blur in action shots, according to Kodak.
The company added that at 5 million pixels, the KAC-05020 provides the highest resolution available in the popular ¼†optical format, and enables imagery up to ISO 3200 and support for full 720p video at 30 fps.
