Kidnappers Want Afghan Christian For Torsello’s Freedom

Gabriele Torsello

The gunmen who abducted Kash Gabriele Torsello in Afghanistan over the weekend have made known their demands for the release of the Italian photojournalist.

The kidnappers are offering to release Torsello in exchange for an Afghan citizen who has been granted asylum in Italy. The Afghani Abdul Rahman fled to Italy after converting to Christianity, an offense punishable by death in Afghanistan.

They have set a deadline – the end of Ramadhan on Tuesday Oct. 24 – for the Italian government to hand over Rahman in exchange for Torsello’s freedom.

The Italian is a London-based freelance photojournalist covering the conflict in Afghanistan. He was abducted together with his translator who was immediately released. Torsello has a wife and child.
