JPEG Approves Microsoft’s HD Photo to be JPEG XR

It’s all official save for the official announcement: Microsoft’s Windows Media Photo which became HD Photo is now about to become JPEG XR and become the new image standard to replace the old JPEG.

The Joint Photographic Experts Group has approved “an effort to make Microsoft’s HD Photo format a standard called JPEG XR.”

Bill Crow, who has led Microsoft’s HD Photo effort, said “”The country vote is done, and it passed. That means the International JPEG committee has decided to go ahead and create the standard. Now it’s just a process of doing that work.”

Microsoft says HD Photo offers better compression and support for in-camera image processing. It’s part of Windows Vista but Microsoft offers the software development kit to implement the technology free and with no royalty constraints. Adobe supports the HD Photo effort.
