Imperial War Museum to Celebrate George Rodger Centenary

George Rodger (1908-1995)

The Imperial War Museum North, located in Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, is celebrating the centenary of George Rodger, one of the co-founders of the Magnum picture agency whose launch in 1947 heralded a golden age of photojournalism.

The museum will present a major exhibition of his wartime work, a few miles from his birthplace in Cheshire. “Contact: George Rodger’s War Photographs“, which opens next month, showcases 100 works by the self-taught press photographer.

The British photojournalist is noted for his work in Africa and for taking the first photographs of the death camps at Bergen-Belsen at the end of the Second World War, which showed emaciated survivors and piles of dead bodies in the concentration camps in 1945.
