Hands-On Reviews of the Nikon D40

The Nikon D40 is the most compact Nikon DSLR to date, and the most affordable; so affordable in fact it competes even at the price point of many bridge-class cameras and some point-and-shooter compacts.

Its entry at the lowest bracket of the DSLR market is creating a buzz with its low price of $600, with its offering of point-and-shoot simplicity and the Nikon name.

Already, two major reviewers have a hands-on experience with the camera and they are reporting positive feedback.

Dave Etchells of Imaging Resource says this of the Nikon D40: “While it’s aimed at novice users, it in no way comes across as a “dumbed down” camera – The D40 is clearly all Nikon; its heritage is apparent throughout.”

Etchells adds that the new camera’s small size combined with strong capabilities and loads of novice-friendly features make this a camera destined for greatness.

Phil Askey of DPreview notes that the D40 follows on from the D50 but at a significantly lower price point and with a subtly different feature set. “The biggest news however is probably the fact that Nikon resisted the temptation to keep chasing megapixels (hooray for that) and instead appear to have concentrated on what makes a good camera, a decent viewfinder, short shutter lag, very short viewfinder blackout,” he said.

Grandma and grandpa are looking forward to their new point-and-shoot DSLR.
