Greenpeace: Thumbs Up to Apple’s Green Move

Greenpeace says they are cheering Steve Jobs for his decision to phase out toxic chemicals from Apple’s products, starting with the worst chemicals in its product range, Brominated Fire Retardants (BFRs) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) by 2008. Jobs also announced a switch this year to LED-backlit displays for its Macs to replace displays that use cold cathode fluorescent (CCFLs) backlights.

Greenpeace said, “It’s not everything we asked for,” but we have to start somewhere. No green products have actually gotten to the market yet, from Apple or from any other electronics manufacturer, said Greenpeace. “That’s a race worthy of the wizards of Cupertino,” the environment advocate said.

Greenpeace also congratulated Apple fans and users who have contributed their thoughts and blogs and creativity to the campaign to make Apple green.

“Put a happy tune on your ipod and do a happy dance,” the green group intoned.
