Elvis is Alive! And So Is Yashica

Yashica EZ7032 Digital Camera

The Yashica brand is having a revival of sorts, this time with new offerings in the consumer digital camera market, the point-and-shoots, if you will.

The storied Yashica of Japan, according to our yellowed and dusty reference, introduced the world’s first electronically controlled 35mm camera in 1965 (during the reign of King Elvis); that was the Electro 35, a popular rangefinder model that eventually sold 5 million units. They enjoyed their heyday until about 1985 when they were edged out by Minolta who was in turn edged out by Canon and Nikon in the digital age.

The Yashica name is back in harness with diversified offerings in consumer electronics including digital cameras: EZ7030, EZ8032, EZ7032-SL, EZ7032-BK, pictured above, and other models that are not really standouts – you can see (strikingly) similar offerings from Sony or Casio. The only outstanding fact is that the venerable Yashica name is being kept alive.

The Yashica brand is now managed by JNC Datum Tech, the technology arm of Hong Kong-based MF Jebsen, a multinational and multi-interest corporation.
