Dell Laptops: Ubuntu is Only $50 Cheaper Than Basic Vista

Dell Ubuntu Notebook PC

A comparison between two identically configured Dell notebook PCs shows that Ubuntu Linux operating system is only $50 cheaper than Windows Vista Home Basic.

The Dell Inspiron 1420 laptops were equipped with the Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 processor, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 80GB SATA HDD and Combo optical drives.

The one installed with Ubuntu Linux version 7.04 is priced at $774 while the Vista Basic-powered rig was listed at $824.

Is Dell trying to show that Ubuntu is just marginally cheaper than Vista Home Basic, or are they trying to cheer up the Linux crowd with an Ubuntu OEM installation?

Many people will opt for the Vista OS because their apps are made for Windows only. Me, I’ll have Ubuntu; if only to steer clear of the bloated adware that a Windows install entails.
