Deblurring, Anyone?

Researchers have found a way to take the blur out of a picture AFTER it was taken. The technique is based on an algorithm that figures out how a camera moved based on the blurry picture. It then follows that path back to reverse much of the resultant blurring.

Of course Photoshop CS2 has its “smart sharpen” filter, but it works only if the camera moved in a straight line. The deblurring technique being developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Toronto works in real-world blurry photos taken with more complicated jiggling motions.

But don’t expect the technology to be in cameras or software anytime soon. The researchers said there’s still quite a bit of work to be done before it gets into a real application.
