CITA: Canadians Bought 3-Million Digital Cameras in 2006

The Canadian Imaging Trade Association (CITA) says that sales of digital cameras in Canada rose by 20% in 2006, with 3 million units sold compare to 2.5 million in 2005.

DSLR cameras led the increase with 145,000 units shipped, a 50% jump over the year before. But CITA expects a slowing down for camera sales in 2007 as the market matures and as alternate image capture devices (such as camera phones) impact the market negatively, especially at the lower price end.

CITA estimates the total imaging market in Canada to be $1.8 billion. It said 2007 will see up to 60% of Canadian homes with a digital camera.
