Cisco Switches Off Flip Video Business

Cisco is closing down its Flip compact camcorder division following an 18 percent drop in earnings in Q2 2011 for the company.

Cisco said it will exit aspects of its consumer businesses and realign the remaining consumer business to support four of its five key company priorities – core routing, switching and services; collaboration; architectures; and, as far as video is concerned, they will “refocus.”

Analysts observed that Cisco’s Flip video business, which the company bought from Pure Digital for $590 million two years ago, has been slow to respond to recent advances made in the smartphone and social networking technologies, sealing its demise.
