Canon Introduces New Rebel T2i with External Mic Port

Canon Rebel T2i Digital SLR Camera

Canon’s new Rebel T2i, a.k.a EOS 550D and successor to the T1i, sports a compelling external microphone socket that is important for video makers who want to record decent audio. Its 18-megapixel sensor is debatable: entry-level users seldom print large photographs (there’s plenty of pixels in a 10-MP sensor even for poster sized pics), but it could be important for photographers who always shoot loose frames and then crop it to improve composition (which is a lousy way of shooting, anyway).

But the external mike is good, especially if it does not do automatic audio gain during recording. Previous video-capable DSLRs did not have an external mic input.

Canon touts the other features of the Rebel T2i: 3.7 fps shooting, an ISO range of 100-6400 (expandable to 12,800), a 63-zone Dual Layer Metering System, Canon’s DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor and 3:2 aspect ratio 3-inch LCD.

There are quite a few goodies too in the video department: full 1080p HD Video at 23.97, 24.97, and 29.97fps; 720p HD Video at 50 and 59.94 fps; 640×480 SD Video at 50 and 59.94 fps; new 7x Crop Zoom option in 640×480 SD video mode and full manual control of Aperture, Shutter, and ISO.

The new Rebel T2i will be available early March at $900 MSRP, with an 18-55mm kit lens.
