Canon today introduced another entry-level DSLR camera, the Canon EOS 1000D (EOS Kiss Digital F in Japan), a 10-megapixel model with all the powers of a full-fledged DSLR but targeted at first-time photographers.

The new model, which was announced simultaneously in Tokyo and in Amsterdam, will be known as EOS Rebel XS in the U.S., taking its place just a notch under the XSi model announced last January, and bumping off the XT model below it.

The EOS Rebel XS features the XSi’s Live View on a 2.5-inch LCD screen, boasts a 7-point AF system and a burst rate of 3fps of continuous shooting. The Rebel XS is powered by Canon’s new Digic III image processing engine and touts improved battery life.

The Rebel XS/1000D is priced at €649 (about $1,000) in Europe with an 18-55mm Image Stabilized kit lens. The new camera is expected to be in the US by July and will be priced at the XTi’s level (about $740, street).
