Canon Female Photojournalist Award 2006

The Canon Female Photojournalist Award was created in 2001 by the French Marketing Director of Canon Communication and Image. This year the award went to French photographer Véronique de Viguerie. Her project on Communist Militiawomen in Nepal inspired the French Association of Women Journalists (AFJ) to award her the grant from Canon of €8000. The Award will be presented at the 18th International Festival of Photojournalism Visa pour l’Image in Perpignan, France, on 9th September 2006.

During the next year de Viguerie will use the grant money to work on a project while living with and photographing an all-female division of the People’s Liberation Army in Nepal while they train and fight against their current political situation. The completed project will be presented at next year’s Visa pour l’Image.

Véronique de Viguerie was born in France in 1978. She studied photography in England before becoming a freelance photojournalist in 2004. She has done many reports from Afghanistan having first visted there for a newspaper assignment in 2003 and from Pakistan as well. Her work has put her in danger due to the harsh environments that she photographs, including an almost deadly suicide bombing at Kabul cafe.

Her photos have been published in Newsweek, The New York Times, LIFE, The Daily Telegraph, The Times, Le Monde and Libération.
