Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 Lens Review by SLRGear.com

Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 Lens

The aging but still durable Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 wide angle prime lens can still be had today for about $300 or less. It’s an inexpensive option if you’re into wide angle shooting. Released in 1988, before the advent of digital SLRs, it was designed to fit a full-size 36 x 24mm film frame. It perfectly fits today’s Canon digital SLRs, with which it will have an effective field of view of either 39mm (1.6x) or 31mm (1.3x).

SLRGear.com posted a recent review of the said prime lens, noting that the 24mm f/2.8 is still actively manufactured by Canon. The review points out that this old lens exhibits quite a bit of corner softness, on both sub- and full-frame camera bodies. Depending on your preference, this may or may not be a desirable effect. But given the sharpness of today’s new lenses, this old 24mm f/2.8 may underwhelm.

“On balance, however, it’s not overly expensive, and if you want wide-angle on a budget, it’s one of your options,” writes reviewer Andrew Alexander.
