Canada is reporting a 26 percent jump in digital camera sales in 2007, vastly overshooting a predicted 10 percent growth for the year.

The Canadian Imaging Trade Association (CITA) said the big disparity between predicted and actual growth was not a result of poor forecasting but a genuinely unexpected shift in consumer buying trends. CITA said Canadian consumers are upgrading to higher performance digital cameras much earlier and faster that what its members anticipated.

Camera manufacturers shipped more than 3.8 million digital cameras in 2007, up from 3 million in 2006 and 2.5 million in 2005. The group had originally forecast sales of 3.3 million cameras in 2007.

DSLR cameras posted the biggest growth at 45 percent, with 210,000 units shipped in 2007. In 2006, it was 50 percent.
