Can Camera Phones Ever Take Good Pictures?

HP and Flextronics are collaborating to make camera phones that take photographs that are as good as today’s digital cameras. They are giving themselves five years to do that.

Today, photos taken by even the most expensive camera phones are not really that good. HP and Flextronics have combined their technological expertise to produce a mobile phone with improved imaging capabilities. In their agreement, HP will provide an exclusive license of its image processing technology to Flextronics for use in camera modules, in return for a royalty.

“This agreement is a breakthrough for the booming camera phone market because it will transform photos into higher quality images into keepsakes to share and print,” says Tara Bunch, vice president, Imaging and Printing Group, HP.

It is estimated that 600 million camera-enabled phones will be shipped worldwide in 2006 and that number is expected to grow to more than 975 million by 2010.
