Book: “Getting Started with Camera Raw” by Ben Long

Getting Started with Camera Raw by Ben Long

The RAW format used to be the domain of professional photographers and enthusiasts only. Everybody else was doing fine with JPEG and almost exclusively JPEG alone. Maybe a smattering of TIFFs here and there, a few PNGs and quite a number of GIFs, but folks use JPEG overwhelmingly even to this day.

But that is changing. More and more people are moving up to digital SLR cameras which have built-in capability to shoot RAW. Even point-and-shoot cameras now include the RAW format.

Camera Raw is a plug-in software for Photoshop that allows a photographer to process and enhance photos shot in RAW. And to understand it and take advantage of the greater editing flexibility of the RAW format and produce better final images, the user has to understand what Camera Raw is all about.

Imaging expert Ben Long has released his book “Getting Started with Camera Raw.” In it, he explains exactly what RAW is and why photographers should use it. He then describes the theory, shooting, and image editing practices needed to work with RAW files. Ben also provides an overview of software used to convert RAW files and a thorough explanation of how to use Photoshop and Photoshop Elements to edit RAW images.
