Blu-ray Beats HD-DVD in Q1 2007

The Blu-ray optical disc format has sold over 830-thousand copies in the first quarter of this year, edging out rival HD-DVD in their race for dominant position in the format war.

According to a research by Home Media Magazine, consumers bought nearly 1.2 million high-definition discs between January 1 and March 31. Of these, 832,530 were Blu-ray discs and 359,300 were HD DVDs, a 70/30 ratio in favor of Blu-ray.

We take note of course that the dominance of Blu-ray has largely been due to the Sony PS3 gaming console, which has Blu-ray built-in and has been sold at a loss to help encourage both game and movie sales. Toshiba of the HD-DVD camp is trying to counter this with price drops of their own.

Sales of the next-generation 50GB optical disc formats had been slow compared to regular DVDs due to the very steep price that both Blu-ray and HD-DVD entail.
