A $199 Notebook PC from Asus, Intel

Eee Notebook PC from Asus and Intel

One of the more eye-catching new releases at the ongoing Computex Taipei 2007 is the Eee PC introduced jointly by Intel and computer maker Asus.

The Eee PC is an inexpensive notebook PC aimed at spreading computing to developing regions around the world. The affordable computer starts at $199.

The Eee PC stands for “easy to learn, easy to play, easy to work,” according to Jonney Shih, Chairman and CEO of Asus. He also doesn’t hide the fact that Eee sounds very much like Nintendo’s Wii game console which, he said, novices can pick up and play in a matter of minutes.

No shipping date yet for the new 2-pound laptop and details are still scarce but the first model, the Eee PC 701 with a 7-inch screen, will definitely have 802.11b/g WiFi, LAN card and modem for connectivity, a webcam, 512MB RAM and up to 16GB flash SSD as hard drive.
