US photographer Spencer Platt of Getty Images is this year’s winner of the World Press Photo of the Year award. His winning photo was taken on August 15, 2006 in Southern Beirut after a heavy Israeli bombardment of the Lebanese capital. The photo shows a group of young people touring a devastated district of the city in an open topped car.

“It’s a picture you can keep looking at. It has the complexity and contradiction of real life, amidst chaos. This photograph makes you look beyond the obvious,” says World Press Photo jury chair Michele McNally.

Platt will receive his prize and a cheque for 10,000 euros on April 22 at the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.

In the sports category, Dutch photographer Peter Schols’s series of photos of the French headbutter footballer Zidane during the World Cup final in Berlin last summer also won honors.
