What is Lens Flare and How Do We Deal with It?

Lens flare can be used to add a desired effect to your photo, but more often than not, lens flare can distract.

To minimize the effect of lens flare, lens manufacturers use special coatings on the lenses. Camera makers too invariably include a lens hood when you purchase an SLR camera to aid in eliminating or at least reducing undesirable lens flare.

But the best tool for the photographer to deal with lens flare is to understand the phenomenon. What is lens flare and how is it created?
